How context works in ShowPilot
The facts and goals you give ShowPilot, where each one lives, and which part of the product reads it.
ShowPilot speaks for your company to buyers you haven't met yet. Context is what keeps that accurate. You give it facts about your business and the goal for each hub. The agent and the tour writer turn those into their own words for each buyer, so you never write a script line by line.
This article explains the layers of context, where you set each one, and what reads it.
What are the layers of context?
Each layer answers one question about your business. You set most of them once and correct them rarely.
| Layer | Where you set it | What uses it |
|---|---|---|
| Company context | Settings → Context, Context tab | Tour writing. Product context also shapes how ShowPilot describes your captures and drafts a hub's context. |
| Tour audiences | Settings → Context, Audiences tab | Tour writing. Each tour is written for one audience. |
| Visitor audiences | Inbound → Audiences, attached on each agent's Audiences tab | The agent in conversation, and the offer Designer. |
| Agent brand and tone | The agent's Persona tab, Brand and Tone cards | The agent in every conversation. |
| Brand kit voice sample | Settings → Brand, Voice sample | The offer Designer when it drafts an offer. |
| Hub context | A hub's Context tab | Tour writing for that hub's tours, and the agent while it presents them. |
| Screen context | Edit context on a screen | Tour writing, and the agent while that screen is on view. |
You're in the right place when you want to know why the agent or a tour said something, or where to change it.
Who reads which layer?
There are two readers.
The tour writer drafts tour copy when you create a tour with ShowPilot ✦ writes for turned on, and rewrites it when you select Rewrite ✦ in the builder. It reads company context, the tour's audience, the hub's context and each screen's description.
The agent talks to visitors on your site. In an ordinary conversation it reads its Persona tab, its knowledge and the visitor audiences attached to it. When it presents a tour, it also reads that hub's context and the description of the screen in view.
Company context on Settings → Context is for tours. To change how the agent describes your company in chat, edit the Brand card on the agent's Persona tab. See The agent editor.
What does ShowPilot fill in for you?
ShowPilot works out what it can from what you've already given it, and asks you only for what it can't know.
| Filled in for you | You provide |
|---|---|
| A description of every screen, written when you capture it | Corrections, through Edit context |
| A hub's Knows fields, drafted from its captures | The account, Aims and Never |
| Suggested visitor audiences, from Suggest with AI | Which audiences each agent serves |
| Your brand kit, from Pull from the site on Settings → Brand | Your company context, typed on Settings → Context |
Your edits always win over anything ShowPilot drafted.
Why do you set goals instead of lines?
Buyers ask different questions in a different order, so a fixed script breaks on the first surprise. You tell ShowPilot what's true and what you want, and the agent decides how to say it for the person in front of it.
- Aims on a hub is an objective, such as getting a technical evaluator to book a security review. The agent reaches it its own way.
- The account notes steer the agent's choices but never appear in anything a viewer sees.
- Never on a hub is a hard boundary. It outranks everything else the agent knows.
How do you see what the agent knows about a hub?
Open a hub's Context tab. The panel on the right, What the agent already knows, lists every layer the hub's tours read, from your workspace down to each screen, with the values you've saved. It also shows how many of the hub's captures the agent can see. Use it to find gaps and to avoid repeating the same fact in two places.
Troubleshooting
| Issue | What to check |
|---|---|
| Tour copy is accurate but doesn't sound like your company | Fill in Voice & tone on Settings → Context, then select Rewrite ✦ in the builder. |
| The agent describes your company wrongly in chat | Edit the Brand card on the agent's Persona tab. Settings → Context doesn't reach ordinary conversations. |
| The agent talks about something it shouldn't while presenting | Add it to the hub's Never group. |
| The agent says the wrong thing about one screen | Correct that screen with Edit context. |
| The agent doesn't tailor its proof to a kind of buyer | Check the visitor audience exists in Inbound → Audiences and is attached on the agent's Audiences tab. |
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to fill in every layer?
No. Start with company context and your hub's Aims. ShowPilot drafts screen descriptions and each hub's Knows fields for you.
Are tour audiences the same as visitor audiences?
No. They're separate lists with separate jobs. Tour audiences decide who a tour is written for. Visitor audiences help the agent recognize the person it's talking to. See Set up your audiences.
Will the agent repeat my context word for word?
No. Context tells the agent what's true and what you want. It chooses its own words for each buyer.
Which layer wins when two disagree?
A hub's Never outranks everything else. Beyond that, keep each fact in one place so there's nothing to disagree. The What the agent already knows panel shows where each fact lives.
