Put your agent on your site

Approve your domain, add one script to your site, and check that your agent appears.

Your agent starts working for you once it's in front of the visitors already on your website. ShowPilot runs on your site through one script, called the web tag. You add the same tag to every page. ShowPilot then decides which agent appears on which page, using the domains and paths you set in ShowPilot.

This article covers approving your domain, adding the tag, and checking your agent appears.

You're in the right place when your agent is published and ready for real visitors.

Before you start

  • A published agent. Only published agents appear on your site, and drafts never show to visitors.
  • Access to your website's code or site builder, or a developer who can paste a script for you.

How do you install the web tag?

Approve your domain

In ShowPilot, go to Settings → Targeting and select Add domain. Enter your website's domain.

Your agent only appears on domains you approve here. Until you add paths to a domain, your oldest published agent appears on every page of that site.

Copy the web tag

Go to Settings → Web Tag and select Copy Code. The tag looks like this:

<script src="https://cdn.showpilot.com/widget/v1/app.js" type="text/javascript" defer></script>

Paste it into your site

Paste the tag just before the closing </body> tag on every page where an agent should be available. Most site builders have one place for code that runs on every page:

Site builderWhere to paste it
WebflowSite settings → Custom code → Footer code
WordPressAppearance → Theme File Editor, in your theme's footer file
FramerSite settings → Custom code, at the end of the body
Custom HTMLBefore </body> in your page template

Publish your site so the change goes live.

Test it

Your agent is live when a new visitor can see it and get an answer:

  1. Open your website in a private browser window, so you see it the way a new visitor does.
  2. Go to a page on the domain you approved. Your agent appears within a few seconds.
  3. Send the agent a message to confirm it answers.

Troubleshooting

Work down this table. The first two rows cover most cases.

IssueWhat to check
The domain doesn't matchThe domain in Settings → Targeting must match the site you're viewing.
The agent isn't publishedThe agent must be published. Unpublished changes and draft agents never appear to visitors.
The agent is missing on some pagesIf you added paths to the domain, the agent only appears on pages that match them.
The tag isn't liveView your page's source and search for cdn.showpilot.com. If it isn't there, your site builder didn't publish the change.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a different tag for each agent?

No. You add the same tag to every page, and ShowPilot decides which agent appears where.

Which agent appears if I haven't set up any paths?

Your oldest published agent appears on every page of an approved domain until you add paths to it.

Why don't my latest changes show on the site?

Visitors only see the published version of your agent. Unpublished changes never appear.

Do I need a developer?

Only if you can't edit your site's code or site builder yourself. The install is one script pasted before </body>.
