How agents work

What a ShowPilot agent is, where its answers come from, and how your changes reach visitors.

A ShowPilot agent works the visitors on your website for your sales team. It answers their questions from your own content and asks the questions you need answered. It suggests content and tours, and offers a meeting when a visitor is ready. Visitors can type, talk, or meet it as a video avatar.

This article explains what an agent is made of and how your edits reach visitors. It also covers how you control where the agent appears.

You're in the right place when you're planning your first agent, or you want to know which part of the editor controls a behavior you're seeing.

What is a ShowPilot agent?

An agent is the assistant that greets visitors on your website. You can run more than one. Each agent is configured on its own, from persona to knowledge to scripts, and you decide which agent appears on which pages of your site.

Where do its answers come from?

SourceWhat it gives the agent
KnowledgeWebsite pages, short snippets and PDFs you add on the agent's Training tab, plus any shared datasets you attach from Knowledge. The agent answers from this content. See Add knowledge.
PersonaYour brand description, the agent's name and role, and the tone you pick. These shape how it speaks. See The agent editor.
ScriptsThe steps you want a conversation to follow, the goals it works toward and the things it must never say. See Guide conversations with scripts.
SkillsReusable playbooks, written in plain English, that the agent applies in every conversation. See Skills.
ContentA playlist from your Content library that the agent draws on when it suggests something to read or watch. See Content library.

How do your changes reach visitors?

Everything you change in the agent editor is saved as a draft. Visitors keep getting the last published version until you select Publish. Each publish creates a numbered revision, so you can see what is live and restore an earlier one. See Preview and publish.

Where does the agent appear?

An agent only appears on your site after you deploy it to a domain and install the web tag. You pick the whole site or specific pages. You also pick how it shows up and when. See Choose where your agent appears.
