Set up your audiences
Define who your tours are written for, and learn how tour audiences differ from the visitor audiences your agent recognizes in conversation.
A tour for a security reviewer and a tour for a sales leader can use the same screens and still need different words. Tour audiences let ShowPilot write each version for the person watching, with the focus, tone and next step that fits them.
This article covers the Audiences tab in Settings → Context, where tour audiences are used, and how they differ from the audiences in Inbound.
Which audiences are which?
ShowPilot has two audience lists. They're stored separately, and editing one never changes the other.
| Tour audiences | Visitor audiences | |
|---|---|---|
| Where you edit them | Settings → Context, Audiences tab | Inbound → Audiences |
| What they describe | Who a tour is written for | Kinds of buyers who visit your site |
| Fields | Name, Who they are, Focus, Tone, Call to action | Name, Description, Match hint, plus talking points and offers from Spotlight |
| How they're chosen | You pick one per tour. A hub can narrow the list. | Attached per agent on its Audiences tab. The agent works out which one a visitor matches. |
| What reads them | The tour writer | The agent in conversation, and the offer Designer |
The agent's Audiences tab lists your visitor audiences from Inbound → Audiences. It doesn't show tour audiences. See Describe your audiences.
You're in the right place when you want tour copy written for a particular kind of viewer.
How do you set up tour audiences?
Open the Audiences tab
Go to Settings → Context and select Audiences. The tab shows how many audiences you have.
ShowPilot ships with four: Marketing, Sales, Customer success and Product evaluation. Each row shows who the audience is, with its Focus, Tone and CTA.
Edit a shipped audience
Hover a row and select Edit. Change any field and select Save. The row now shows edited, and your version replaces the shipped one for your workspace.
Add your own
Select New audience and fill in the fields:
| Field | What to put there |
|---|---|
| Name | What your team calls this viewer. |
| Who they are | Who the tour is for and what they care about. |
| Focus | What the tour should emphasise for them. |
| Tone | How it should sound to them. |
| Call to action | What to ask them to do next. |
Select Add audience. Audiences you add show yours.
Reset or delete
To undo your changes to a shipped audience, hover it and select Reset to shipped. To remove one you added, select Delete. Shipped audiences can't be deleted.
Where do you pick a tour's audience?
- New tour. The ShowPilot ✦ writes for row picks the audience the first draft is written for.
- The builder. On a tour's Script view, open Audiences, pick an audience and select Rewrite ✦. When the tour came from a capture session, the panel also offers New version for another audience.
- A hub. On a hub's Context tab, the For group has a chip for each audience. Select the ones in play for that hub, or leave them all off to allow every audience.
Test it
Your audiences are working when:
- You open a tour in the builder and select Script.
- You open Audiences, pick the audience you just edited or added and select Rewrite ✦.
- The new copy follows that audience's focus and ends on its call to action.
Troubleshooting
| Issue | What to check |
|---|---|
| A new audience doesn't appear in a hub's For group | Reload the hub's Context tab. The chips come from the same list as this tab. |
| An audience you added isn't on the agent's Audiences tab | That tab lists visitor audiences from Inbound → Audiences, a separate list. Add the audience there too if the agent should recognize it. |
| An existing tour didn't change after you edited its audience | Tours keep their copy until rewritten. Select Rewrite ✦ in the builder. |
| Save stays disabled | Give the audience a Name. |
Frequently asked questions
Can I delete a shipped audience?
No. You can edit it, and Reset to shipped brings back the original.
Do tour audiences affect what the agent says in chat?
No. The agent in conversation reads the visitor audiences attached on its Audiences tab. Tour audiences shape tour copy.
Can one tour have more than one audience?
A tour is written for one audience at a time. To serve another, select New version for another audience on the builder's Audiences panel, or rewrite the tour for the new audience.
What happens if a hub has no audiences selected?
Every audience is allowed for that hub's tours.
