AI agent vs. chatbot: what’s actually different

They both sit in the corner of the page. Underneath, they work in different ways. Here’s how to tell them apart, and why it matters for the buyers on your site.

Two openings in a plaster wall: one leads to a small closed alcove, the other to a sunlit garden path.

A chatbot follows a script. An agent works toward a goal.

A chatbot is a decision tree. Someone writes the branches, and the bot matches each message to one of them. Step off the path and it falls back to “Sorry, I didn’t get that,” or a form. Every new product or question means more branches to maintain.

An AI agent starts from a goal, such as answering the buyer and booking a qualified meeting. It reads the question in the buyer’s own words, answers from your content, and decides what to do next. You set the goals and the rules it must never break, and it handles the path.

A chatbot replies. An agent acts.

A chatbot’s output is a message. An agent can do things: open the page that answers the question, show a product tour, make an offer, check a rep’s calendar and book the meeting, or pass the conversation to a person. The difference shows up in what the buyer has at the end of the conversation.

A chatbot starts cold. An agent has context.

A chatbot greets every visitor the same way. An agent can use what it knows: the page they’re on, whether they’ve been here before, and what your CRM knows about their company. That’s the difference between “How can I help?” and an answer that fits the person asking.

When a chatbot is enough

If your visitors ask a short list of predictable questions, like store hours or order status, a scripted bot can handle them. For B2B buyers researching a product, the questions are open-ended and the next step varies, which is where an agent earns its place.

How to tell which one you’re buying

Ask the vendor to show you an unscripted question answered from your own content. Ask what the agent can do besides reply: can it open a page, show the product, book on a real calendar? Ask how you control it, and what happens when it doesn’t know. A chatbot will need a script for each of those. An agent won’t.

Questions people ask.

What’s the difference between an AI agent and a chatbot?

A chatbot matches messages to scripted replies. An AI agent works toward a goal, understands questions in the buyer’s words, and takes actions such as opening a page, showing the product or booking a meeting.

Is ChatGPT a chatbot or an agent?

On its own it’s a conversational model that writes replies. It becomes part of an agent when it’s given a goal, your content and tools to take actions, like booking a meeting.

Are AI agents harder to control than chatbots?

They’re controlled differently. Instead of writing every branch, you set goals and guardrails, and a good agent tells the buyer your team will follow up when it can’t answer from your content.

Can I replace my website chatbot with an AI agent?

Yes. ShowPilot installs with one script tag, like a chatbot, and you choose which pages the agent appears on from the dashboard.
