What is an AI SDR? A guide to AI SDR agents
An AI SDR does the first part of a sales development rep’s job: answering, qualifying and booking. Here’s what that looks like on inbound, and what to look for when you buy one.

What an AI SDR actually does
A human SDR spends the day on the first conversation: replying to new leads, finding out whether they fit, and getting the good ones onto an account executive’s calendar. An AI SDR does the same job in software, without waiting for business hours or a free rep.
On inbound, that means the agent is on your website when the buyer arrives. It answers their questions from your own content, listens for what matters, like budget and timing, and asks for the meeting when the buyer is ready. When they say yes, it books a real time on the right rep’s calendar and writes the conversation to your CRM.
Inbound and outbound AI SDRs
Most tools sold as AI SDRs are outbound: they research accounts and send sequenced emails. Inbound AI SDRs work the other side of the funnel. They talk to people who already came to you, which is why speed and accuracy matter more than volume. A buyer who asks a pricing question at 9pm should get a real answer, not a form.
AI SDR, AI BDR, SDR agent: is there a difference?
In practice, not much. Sales teams often use SDR for reps who work inbound leads and BDR for reps who prospect outbound, and vendors borrow both names. “SDR agent” is the same idea again. What matters is which conversations the agent handles and what it can do in them.
What to look for in an AI SDR
Answers from your content. The agent should answer from your website, documents and notes, and say so when it doesn’t know, rather than guessing from the open internet.
Knows when to ask. An agent that asks for a meeting on the first message burns good buyers. Look for one that waits until the buyer is ready and lets you set when it may ask.
Qualifies without a quiz. The best agents pick up qualification from what the buyer says and only ask for what’s missing, instead of running a checklist.
Books on real calendars. It should show real open times from the right rep’s calendar, routed by your rules, so the meeting lands with the right person.
Hands off to people. Your reps should be able to see live conversations and step in when a buyer is worth a human.
Shows the product. Buyers want to see how it works. An agent that can open the right page or present a product tour answers questions a text reply can’t.
Will an AI SDR replace your SDR team?
It changes what the team spends time on. The agent takes the first touch on every visitor, the after-hours traffic and the repeat questions. Your reps take the conversations that need a person, and the meetings arrive with the qualification and the full conversation attached.
Where ShowPilot fits
ShowPilot is an AI SDR agent for your website. It answers from your content in chat, by voice or on video, opens the page or presents the product tour that proves the answer, qualifies in conversation, and books the meeting on the right rep’s calendar. Your team can take over any conversation and hand it back. See the agent.
